Flying to Freedom
A Wild Comedy
By: Christo Boytchev
Adaptation, Direction, and Songs: Niko Nitai
Cast: Ofir Duan, Osher Bet Halahmi, Leon Nonin, Gal israeli, Yoav Sadowsky, Dalia Ribar, Assaf Mor
A group of extraordinary individuals, abandoned by the medical establishment in a remote institution in the Balkan mountains, find new life thanks to an unexpected gift from the skies, and they carve their way to freedom. The play explores the boundaries of freedom of expression and offers a compassionate and humorous perspective on the role of the 'madman' and the different in achieving the human dream. The play won the Best Play award at an international competition in Britain for being "full of joy, magical, and unique. It’s an inspiring comic fable for our times."
Critics Say:
“This allegory on madness that manages to feign sanity in a crazy world is staged by Nitai in a truly engaging way… As usual with Karov Theater productions, Nitai manages to gather a very enthusiastic group of actors. Each of them deserves praise, not only for their individual efforts in shaping their eccentric characters, but also for the collective spirit that sometimes overflows the stage… All of them deserve recognition and mention.”
—Michael Handelzalts, Haaretz
“Niko Nitai has directed an amusing show in every moment… Like the play and the direction, the seven actors are excellent. They fully inhabit their roles, both as madmen and when they return to sanity on their journey to the border.”
—Zvi Goren, Habama
“A new and interesting play… Impressive visual theater as an art… The acting is superb, one by one.”
— Ben-Ami Feingold, Makor Rishon
