About the movie: Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters

Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters

Paul Schrader's visually stunning, collagelike portrait of acclaimed Japanese author and playwright Yukio Mishima - one of the most important postwar stylists of the Japanese language - investigates the inner turmoil and contradictions of a man who attempted an impossible harmony between self, art, and society.

Taking place on the last day of Mishima's life, when he famously committed public seppuku, the film is punctuated by extended flashbacks to the writer's life, as well as by gloriously stylized evocations of his fictional works. With its rich cinematography, exquisite sets and costumes, and unforgettable score by Philip Glass, Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters is both a tribute to its subject and a bold, investigative work of art in its own right.

Filmography: Adam Resurrected (2008), Affliction (1997), Light of Day (1987), Cat People (1982), American Gigolo (1980), Hardcore (1979).

This film is part of a special tribute titled "Between Mishima and Oshima"
