A Generation

In Nazi-occupied Poland, young Stach joins the communist underground, drawn more by Dorota's charms than by political conviction. When the group is sent to rescue a leader trapped in the Warsaw Ghetto during the uprising, Stach confronts the consequences of his choices. In his debut feature, the first of his War Trilogy, Andrzej Wajda moves beyond socialist realism to portray complex characters rather than ideological stereotypes. Through striking visual contrasts—everyday life unfolding against the smoke-filled ghetto, Jews marched to forced labor—Wajda delivers a powerful portrait of wartime Poland and a landmark of postwar Polish cinema.
