About the movie

Stand by Me

A special screening in memory of Rob Reiner.

Four twelve year old boys from a small town in Oregon set out on a two day journey to find the body of a boy their age who has disappeared in the surrounding woods.

From this simple premise, the director creates one of the most beautiful and moving coming of age films in American cinema.

The film is structured as a flashback, told by an adult writer looking back on his childhood and the deep bond he shared with his friends, focusing on intimacy, loyalty, and fractures within the group at a pivotal moment in their lives.

Stephen King is often identified as a horror writer, and while this film, based on one of his short stories, does contain elements of fear, Reiner’s adaptation gives that fear a meaningful role in the emotional growth and maturation of its characters.

The result is a film that maintains a precise balance between tension and melancholy, and continues to move audiences with honesty and emotional clarity even today.
