Violence at Noon is Oshima's first great masterpiece, introducing a new formal complexity into his cinema. It is a disturbing study of the criminal mind and a moving elegy to failed dreams.
The film is based on the notorious nationwide killing spree of the "Daylight Demon," a brutal murderer who took the lives of more than thirty victims during the late 1950s, all women and all killed in broad daylight. In a twist, the film is as much about the two women who protect the violent man – his wife and a former victim – as it is about him.
