In 1988, East Germany’s DEFA Studios commissioned a documentary capturing the vibrant punk and rock scene flourishing behind the Iron Curtain. Director Dieter Schumann and his crew immersed themselves in a world of electrifying performances, rebellious bands, and passionate young fans, creating a fascinating portrait of a thriving musical counterculture and the state’s uneasy relationship with its youth. Upon its release, the film became an unexpected sensation, drawing over a million viewers eager to see their favorite bands on screen; and discover what the censors had allowed through. Featuring Feeling B, Silly, Chicorée, and Die Zöllner, the film remains a spirited testament to music’s rebellious energy.
