Ballroom culture is a queer subculture that developed in the 1960s in Harlem, New York, by Black and Latina trans women who, in response to the racism they experienced in other LGBTQ+ spaces, created a space for themselves and others where they could celebrate their identities, bodies, and visibility. It is a space where queer people can freely express and celebrate themselves, compete in different categories, and experience a sense of belonging, community, and empowerment.
