A richly coloured journey through Richard Strauss’s instrumental and vocal pieces, where sumptuous melodies, intimate lyricism, and theatrical brilliance unfold in a luminous concert portrait.
While history often remembers Richard Strauss for his massive orchestral tone poems and grand operas, tonight’s program steps away from the roaring brass and wall-of-sound orchestration to enter his private musical sanctuary. This concert pairs his most exquisite Lieder (art songs) for voice and piano with his brilliant, youthful masterworks for cello, violin, and piano. Together, these pieces reveal Strauss as a composer of profound intimacy, lyricism, and emotional vulnerability.
The concert opens with the fiery brilliance of Strauss’s early instrumental years, highlighting his masterful chamber writing before he turned almost exclusively to the opera house.
