Shoe Stories

We rarely stop to look closely at our shoes. They are always there, beneath our feet, accompanying us with every step — yet they tell far more than we might imagine. Beyond their practical function, shoes reflect identity, status, beliefs, memories, fashion, technology, and dreams. They appear in myths and fairy tales, signify social and cultural belonging, and at times express power, prestige, protest, or freedom.

For the first time, the Israel Museum presents an exhibition devoted entirely to shoes. Drawing on the Museum’s diverse collections alongside special loans, the exhibition reveals the human, cultural, and historical stories embedded in one of the most familiar objects of everyday life.

The exhibition explores a range of themes: shoes endowed with power and magic; impossible shoes created to impress, signal status, or challenge the limits of the body; ancient footwear thousands of years old that reveals surprising connections between past and present; shoes as works of art and products of innovative, groundbreaking design; and, of course, Israeli shoes — from biblical and pioneering sandals to locally iconic footwear. Together, they raise questions about identity, culture, and belonging.

Alongside dozens of rare objects from different periods and cultures, the exhibition features immersive installations and interactive projects created especially for it by Israeli artists and designers working in theater, sound, new media, design, and visual art. These works offer additional ways to enter the stories behind the shoes and to encounter them from unexpected perspectives.

Ultimately, shoes do more than tell the story of the time or culture in which they were made — they also tell the personal stories of the people who wear them.
