Music has always been drawn to the unseen. In the early 19th century, as the Romantics rediscovered Shakespeare, Goethe’s Faust, and traditional folk tales, ghosts and fairies stepped out of the pages of literature and found a new home in the world of sound.
But what exactly separates a ghost from a fairy? A ghost belongs to the past: a shadow, a memory, someone who is gone but refuses to let go. A fairy belongs to the imagination: light, mischievous, and free to wander between worlds.
These two worlds intertwine in two of the greatest works ever written for piano trio. Beethoven’s “Ghost” Trio takes its nickname from its dark, mysterious slow movement, framed by two movements full of light and playful energy. In Mendelssohn’s trio, fairies seem to dance through the scherzo, yet the work as a whole inhabits a darker realm of shadows and memories.
As with every Smart Concert, the audience becomes an integral part of the story. Through an AI-powered app, you can respond to the music in real time, with the different voices from the audience coming together to create visual scenes. Note by note, a world that has remained hidden from sight will unfold before our eyes.
