Alma, the protagonist of the play, works as the housekeeper for Claude Stein — a bank clerk by day and a closet composer by night. Claude’s mysterious disappearance during a period when Alma was out of the country raises suspicions. Upon her return, an investigator sent to the house attempts to solve the puzzle of Claude’s disappearance, as well as the enigma of his life. Who is this mysterious Claude Stein? What role does music play in his life? What are the sources of inspiration for his work? As the investigation unfolds, his compositions are revealed, and Alma’s true place in his life and art becomes increasingly clear.The plot operates across two timelines: in the present, facing the investigator’s intrusive questions, and in the timeline of memory and the past, where the addressee is Claude. Alma moves between these two time dimensions, with the investigator’s questioning driving her to retreat into memory and pull her answers from there.The play explores the relationship between art and reality, and between life and artistic creation.
