In the Dominican town of Cabarete, bachata – the country’s guitar-driven music of love, heartbreak, and irresistible Afro-Caribbean rhythms – is part of everyday life. Over five years, director Frank Pavich follows four young musicians at the world’s only bachata music school, mentored by renowned guitarist Mártires de León. As they grow into adolescence, music becomes a guide through love, ambition and belonging. Warm, joyful and tinged with melancholy, Agridulce (Bittersweet) captures the passage into adulthood and a new generation finding its own voice within a cherished musical tradition.
