High in the Austrian Alps, tourists glide up the mountains in gondolas while, at 1,300 meters, asylum seekers live in an isolated return center, hours on foot from the nearest town. Unable to film inside, director Lisa Polster meets the men on mountain paths and Alpine meadows, alongside locals whose lives intersect with theirs. Against a breathtaking landscape, Out of Sight reveals a troubling contradiction: a place associated with freedom and escape has become a means of confinement. Wry and quietly unsettling, the film explores what happens when those deemed unwanted are placed beyond society’s view.
